    About Atlas Copco

The Atlas Copco Group began in 1873 in Stockholm, Sweden, as AB Atlas, a supplier of locomotives and railcars to Swedish rail lines. It was founded by Edvard Fränckel, Andre O. Wallenberg, Johan W. Arnberg, Carl G. Cervin, and Fredrik Didro.

The company is named after the titan of Greek mythology, who holds the heavens on his shoulders. When the railroad industry slowed down in 1186, the company restructured and was renamed Nya Atlas (New Atlas) in 1890. The company began making pneumatic tools in 1892.

    Atlas Copco History

In the late 1890s, the Wallenberg family made a deal with German engineer Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the diesel engine, for manufacturing rights for Sweden and formed Diesels Motorer. The company improved the engine and produced the first entirely Swedish diesel engine. Diesels Motorer merged with Nya Atlas in 1917 to become Atlas Diesel and moved operations to Sickla, Sweden, a few years later, where the headquarters remain today.

The company ceased production of diesel engines in 1948 to concentrate on pneumatic tools, compressors, and drilling equipment. In 1956, it officially became Atlas Copco, combining the original Atlas name with that of its Belgian subsidiary, Compagnie Pneumatique Commerciale.

    Meeting Modern Needs

Today, Atlas Copco has operations on every continent except Antarctica and has many brands covering four business areas: Compressor Technique, Vacuum Technique, Industrial Technique, and Power Technique. In 2023, the company celebrated its 150th anniversary. Atlas Copco’s products include industrial compressors, dry vacuums, power tools, generators, and much more.

    Setting The Standard For Compressors

Atlas Copco is best known for its compressors, which remain a staple area for the company. Since the company’s first piston air compressor in 1904, there have been continuous innovations, from the first portable model in 1905 to air-cooled units in the 1930s, the screw compressor in the 1950s, and electric compressors in the 1960s.

In early 2024, Atlas announced the world’s first battery-driven portable compressor, available in a compact and modular concept. With no power grid connection required, no local emissions, low noise, and enough power to run for an entire shift, the B-Air 185-12 can work in any location.
