Volvo Construction Equipment recently launched a pair of new rigid haul trucks in the 55- to 65-tonne (61- to 72-U.S.-ton) payload capacity range. The new Volvo R60 and R70 give customers additional options for quarries and mines with firm, wide, maintained roads where the trucks can put their 60.6 km/h (37.6 mph) top speed to use over lengthier distances and longer haul cycles, as opposed to steeper, narrower haul roads where articulated dump trucks have the advantage.
Volvo R60 & R70 Haul Specifications
The new R60 rigid has the same 55,000-kilogram (121,250-pound) payload capacity as Volvo’s A60H articulated haul truck and a body volume of 36 metres³ (47 yards³). The R70 has a 65,000-kg (143,300-lb) payload capacity and can hold up to 42.5 m³ (55.6 yd³). Volvo says the off-highway trucks’ capacities correspond well with the loading volumes of its EC950F crawler excavator and L350H wheel loader.
The R60 and R70’s V-shaped haul bodies contribute to material retention, rapid emptying via a fast-tip system, and minimal carry-back of material after dumping. An optional onboard weighing system allows the operator to maximise productivity by taking advantage of a 10/10/20 payload policy (running 10% overload for 10% of the time without exceeding 20%).
R60 & R70 Chassis & Drivetrain
Volvo designed the R60 and R70 with a low centre of gravity, balanced weight distribution, and a rugged chassis with the right degree of flexibility. The manufacturer also backed up their high performance and tonnes-per-hour productivity with robustness and reliability that provide a long service life, minimise maintenance requirements, and offer a low total cost of operation.
The new R60 and R70 share many E-generation features and benefits with their older sibling, the 95-t (105-U.S.-t) R100 off-highway truck. For safety and control purposes, the new Volvos have fail-safe braking, a secondary steering system, and a limitation to first gear and 10 km/h (6 mph) when the body is raised to prevent an inadvertent tip-over. The trucks also feature gear-dependent speed control, a selectable brake or transmission retarder, and an overspeed-protected gearbox that acts as a neutral coast inhibitor when driving downhill.
The new trucks’ Stage V/Tier 4 Final Cummins QSK 19 engine supplies 760 gross horsepower (567 kilowatts) at 2,100 rpm, as well as 3,084 newton-metres (2,275 pounds-foot) of gross torque at 1,500 rpm. A high drive axle multiplication feature contributes to traction on mine and quarry roads, while fuel efficiency is aided by Volvo Dynamic Shift Control automatic adaptive gear selection, a selectable Eco mode that defaults to the most efficient gear, and an auto engine idle shutdown function.
Cabin Visibility & Comfort
Volvo developed the R60 and R70 with its latest comfort and safety features. Their rollover protection system/falling object protection system (ROPS/FOPS)-certified cabin is accessible from either side with non-slip steps. Its sizable windscreen, low-angled dashboard, left-side operator station, and optional 360-degree Volvo Smart View feature all contribute to operator visibility and accident prevention.
Operator comfort is enhanced by a strong air conditioning system, an air-suspended seat, low steering effort from the adjustable steering wheel, and vibration-damping, viscous cabin mounts. A Bluetooth radio with mobile phone support and scads of storage space lend themselves to a comfortable work environment where Volvo says operators will perform at their best.
Ease Of Maintenance
Volvo builds the new R60 and R70 at its Motherwell plant in Scotland, which has a nearly 75-year history of developing high-productivity rigid haul trucks. The machines have 500-hour service intervals, easy-access service points, and a ground-level tagout feature. The trucks use common bearing sizes to simplify parts management. On-board service diagnostics and the CareTrack telematics system help to identify potential faults so they can be swiftly corrected.
