A new, heated cab option is now available with JCB’s first fully electric wheel loader, the 403E. The fully glazed cabin makes the 2,729-kilogram (6,016-pound) machine more comfortable to operate in cold or wet conditions. The battery-electric loader boasts zero emissions and significantly reduced noise, maintenance, and vibration.
The Cabin’s Heated Components
The 403E’s new cab has an efficient, 2.2-kilowatt positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater system with three temperature settings. A 10-minute, full-power boost feature rapidly warms the cabin’s interior. The cab also has a heated operator’s seat and front and rear screens that are heated for demisting and defrosting. Like its open-air counterpart, the cab is rollover protection system (ROPS) and falling object protection system (FOPS)-certified.
JCB attempted to address concerns about reduced battery life in an electric machine with electric heating. The manufacturer says the heated seat can lessen the operator’s need to turn on the main heater, saving battery power for loading operations. When a door is opened, the heater automatically turns off to conserve battery power. The system’s blower function can be used with the heat turned off for air circulation year-round, whether the doors are open or shut.
Preheating On The Charger
The operator can set the main heater to preheat the cab 30 minutes before the work shift begins while the loader is still connected to the charger. This way, the cabin can warm up without reducing the batteries’ run time. If no one uses the 403E first thing in the morning, the loader will deactivate the heater 15 minutes after the start of the shift. The 403E only allows preheating when more than 25% battery charge is available.
Capacities & Specifications
JCB says the 403E has a 640-kg (1,411-lb) payload rating and a 1,237-kg (2,727-lb) full-turn tipping load rating. Its shovel capacity is 0.5 metres³ (0.65 yards³). The machine can operate on a battery charge for approximately 4 to 5 hours of continuous use in a mixed-duty cycle. The manufacturer asserts that the battery-electric loader yields the same level of productivity as the diesel-powered 403.
JCB says the 20-kilowatt-hour battery pack in the 403E has one of the largest capacities in its class. The machine comes with an onboard charger, various plugs, and charge leads. It can be recharged on a household grid or CEE socket, or with a 3-phase, off-board rapid charger option that can fully recharge the batteries in just 2 hours with a resulting run time of more than 4 hours.
The JCB 403E’s drive motor generates 33.4 peak kilowatts (45 horsepower), and it’s accompanied by a 20-kW (27-HP) hydraulic pump motor. The operator can choose from three driving modes. The manufacturer says the weight of the new, glazed cab doesn’t hurt the loader’s ability to be towed on a 3.5-tonne (3.85-U.S.-ton) trailer behind a 4x4 or a light commercial vehicle.
Electric Benefits
The 403E’s electric operation generates less noise, vibration, and pollution than a diesel loader and requires less maintenance. It can be used indoors, underground, and in sensitive areas such as hospitals. It’s also suited to agricultural jobs, urban construction, and paving work—anywhere there’s a need to move buckets or pallets of materials with zero emissions and low noise levels.
